Exporting in the fast lane

Challenge

Ever wondered where the last car you owned ended up? You may be surprised to hear that a large portion of the UK’s second hand cars are shipped abroad to be given a new lease of life. One of the firms specialising in this area is the NMT Group. It looks after the worldwide shipment of cars, trucks, trailers and all other self-propelled or rolling cargo.

Operating in the world’s most important trade lanes, it moves cargo worldwide on modern and technically advanced deep-sea and short-sea RoRo vessels. NMT is able to transport all types of vehicles, and also oversized static pieces worldwide using a large fleet of flexible vessels.

NMT needed a reliable partner to help it successfully export used cars from the UK to African ports. With the right blend of skills, experience and location, Peel Ports were in pole position to help.

Ten years on and NMT’s decision to use Peel Ports London Medway has paid off.

The solution

NMT’s success with Peel Ports is has been built three things: flexibility, location and expertise.

With flexible storage space, NMT is able to build stock in two week periods for new vessel calls and plan accordingly. Peel Ports offers NMT short-term storage allowing vehicles to be stored safely and securely.

Peel Ports London Medway is perfectly positioned to connect London, the South East of England, and the Midlands to international trade. The port is located near the capital and the densely populated South East – where the majority of vehicles NMT handle come from. With excellent road and rail connectivity, transporting stock to the port is relatively fast.

NMT also enjoys the freedom to be onsite to inspect cargo before it sets sail.

And with four RoRo berths and lock free access at all states of tide, filling vessels up with vehicles can be done year round, safely and efficiently.

The results really do speak for themselves. In the last financial year alone 7,000 vehicles were exported from Peel Ports London Medway to African ports.

Scott Reeves, Director of NMT Shipping, said: “Our decade-long relationship with Peel Ports is fantastic. We have a specific way of doing business and found that Peel Ports understood our philosophy right from the very start. We’ve been able to successfully work together to enhance our role as a truly independent, global RoRo service provider. Because of their location, expertise and flexibility we’ve been able to grow and keep our customers happy.”
