Describe a typical week
A typical week at the port can consist of many different jobs, from maintaining cranes to straddle carriers and a variety of installation work. The various tasks provide different difficulties and problem-solving skills that will only develop you as an engineer.
What do you enjoy most about working for PPG?
As previously mentioned, I enjoy the various jobs that are carried out as it is something different almost every day. This constantly tests my knowledge and understanding of different systems, unlike most other electrical apprenticeships.
How do you find balancing work with college?
Balancing work with college can be challenging at times, but the company always allocates time to progress your education, which was important when I was studying for my HNC/ HND in electrical engineering.
What type of support do you receive as an apprentice?
I received a vast amount of mentoring throughout my apprenticeship from all of the maintenance team. Each and every individual has had their unique path and were able to share their wealth of knowledge to better my understanding.
What are the highlights of your apprenticeship?
Completing my HNC/HND at college was a highlight of my apprenticeship and carrying out the full installation of the new engineering office at Clydeport.
What elements do you find the most challenging?
Working in harsh environments can be challenging at times but also has its rewards when working outdoors in the summer months.
Where do you see your longer-term career?
Hopefully, my longer-term career will see me continuing at Peel Ports, progressing my skills and eventually taking on my own apprentice.
What advice would you give to others thinking about an apprenticeship?
My advice would be to go for it. The apprenticeship scheme at Peel Ports is excellent for new and upcoming engineers, both electrically and mechanically
