National Apprenticeship Week - Q&A with Sam Abbott, Apprentice IT Service Desk Analyst

10 February 2021

Over the past week, we have featured some of our best and brightest Peel Ports apprentices ranging from engineering to IT.

We caught up with Sam Abbott who works in our IT department to find out more about his apprenticeship journey, his current role and why he would recommend apprenticeships to others.

Tell us a little about yourself; what were you doing before you started your apprenticeship?
My name’s Sam and I’m 19 years old. I loved playing football when I was younger and I always wanted to be a builder or electrician. Before I started my apprenticeship, I went to college for 2 years studying Electrical Installation Level 2 & 3, while working with my uncle as a mechanics mate.

What apprenticeship are you currently studying for?
I’m currently studying IT Infrastructure Level 3 with Baltic Apprenticeships.

Why did you decide on an apprenticeship with Peel Ports?
When I was researching the apprentice opportunities, two options caught my eye. One company was based in Liverpool and the other company was Peel Ports. I decided to choose Peel Ports as they are a well known and highly respected company.

What do you plan to do after your apprenticeship?
I really enjoy working for Peel Ports so I’d love to continue to work here after I have completed my apprenticeship and continue to expand my IT knowledge.

What does your typical day involve?
I like the variety of my role and I get to work on a wide range of business tasks. My typical day involves resolving issues and service requests, answering phone calls and IT related enquiry emails and I also configure and order hardware.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Peel Ports?
I enjoy the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that arises when I resolve IT problems for users and troubleshooting issues I haven’t seen before.

Also, being part of the IT team at Peel Ports, everyone is friendly and approachable – they have made me feel very welcome.

What is your greatest achievement at Peel Ports so far i.e. what are you most proud of?
My greatest achievement so far would be the knowledge I have gained whilst working here! Also, I have improved both my IT and communication skills

What kind of support do you receive as an apprentice?
One of the best things about Peel Ports is the friendly and supportive working environment and there is always someone on hand to answer questions. I also have a mentor who helps me improve my knowledge and learn new things. Peel Ports have supported my apprenticeship by allowing me time to complete coursework for my assessment plans.

What advice would you give others thinking about doing an apprenticeship with Peel Ports? Would you recommend completing an apprenticeship to others?
Go for it! I’ve learned so much in a relatively short period and I now have a range of transferable skills that I can use in other areas than just IT.

An apprenticeship is an amazing opportunity that allows you to experience the world of work while gaining qualifications at the same time.I would encourage students to think about it as an option.
